How to Calculate Your High School GPA for College Applications

Admissions officers often use a student’s GPA as an early determining factor for college admission. While extracurriculars and essays are important, GPA is a key academic determinant.

A high school Grade Point Average (GPA) is a score on a 4.0 scale that reflects academic knowledge and performance. It is determined by a combination of factors, including:

  • Your grades
  • The difficulty of your classes

There are two types of GPAs: unweighted and weighted. Unweighted GPA is an average of all grades without considering class difficulty, while weighted GPA takes into account the rigor of classes.

The average high school GPA in the US is 3.0, but for top colleges, it is closer to 4.0. Improving academics and choosing challenging classes can increase admission chances.

Advanced Placement (AP) classes can boost GPA by +1.0 points. Starting AP classes early can maximize GPA and impress admissions officers.
